In a world where technology is constantly evolving, a new startup called Kinnect aims to help people privately save generational memories, traditions, recipes, and more. The company’s app, launched this month, lets users create invite-only spaces where they can share images, videos, audio, text, and more with their entire family.
A Personal Story of Loss and Inspiration
Kinnect was founded in May 2023 by Omar Alvarez, an entrepreneur who has experience working with telehealth brands focused on mental health. Alvarez came up with the idea for Kinnect after he lost his grandfather to Alzheimer’s and his best friend to leukemia. These personal losses had a profound impact on Alvarez, and he realized that there was a need for a platform where people could record and store their memories in a private and secure way.
The Challenge of Preserving Memories
At the start of his grandfather’s battle with Alzheimer’s, Alvarez and his family were coming to terms with the fact that his grandfather would soon lose his memories. They tried to find a place where they could record and store his memories, but unfortunately, it was too late. Four years later, when Alvarez’s best friend was diagnosed with leukemia, he asked if he knew of a way for him to privately record and store messages for his wife so that she could listen to them after he passed.
The Birth of Kinnect
Alvarez’s personal experiences sparked the idea for Kinnect. He decided to name the app Kinnect because it represents the most inclusive term for family, embracing both chosen and blood relatives alike. Alvarez wants Kinnect to be a platform for everyone to store generational memories, not just blood family.
"I’m Latino, and I’m also gay," says Alvarez. "When I think about family, friends that feel like family are included in that equation. The ‘Kin’ in ‘Kinnect’ represents the most inclusive term for family. And the ‘net’ is for the need to connect. The need to feel like you belong."
How Kinnect Works
Once you get started with the app, you will be asked about your goals. For instance, you can say that you want to "capture life lessons," "preserve family history," "remember loved ones," or "share moments." You can select all of the options that apply to your goals with Kinnect.
Kinnect features a home feed that is similar to the ones on Facebook or Instagram, where users can share their memories and connect with others. The app also allows users to create private groups for sharing specific types of content.
Security and Privacy
Kinnect takes security and privacy seriously. All content shared on the platform is encrypted and stored securely. Users have control over who sees what, and they can choose to share only certain memories or leave them private.
Innovative Features
One of the innovative features of Kinnect is its ability to preserve family traditions and recipes. Users can record audio or video messages explaining how to make a particular dish, along with the ingredients and cooking instructions.
Kinnect also has a feature that allows users to create digital "time capsules" where they can store memories from different periods in their lives. These time capsules can be shared with others or kept private.
Support and Funding
Kinnect is currently participating in an accelerator program from Slauson & Co. The startup has received funding from the program, which aims to help underrepresented founders in the U.S.
"We are excited about the potential of Kinnect," says Maria Rodriguez, Managing Partner at Slauson & Co. "Omar’s vision for a platform that preserves generational memories is innovative and timely."
Conclusion
Kinnect is an exciting new app that has the potential to revolutionize the way we preserve our memories. With its focus on security, privacy, and inclusivity, Kinnect is poised to become a go-to platform for families around the world.
As Alvarez says, "We believe that everyone deserves to have their memories preserved in a safe and secure way. We are committed to making Kinnect a trusted and reliable platform for generations to come."
